That strange tingling, buzzing, or “asleep” feeling in your hands, feet, or limbs is called paresthesia. Most of the time, it’s harmless: you’ve simply put pressure on a nerve or cut off circulation by staying in one position too long. A quick stretch, a change of posture, or a gentle massage usually brings the sensation – and your peace of mind – back within minutes.
But when it doesn’t fade, or keeps returning without any clear reason, it can signal something far more serious. Chronic paresthesia may be linked to nerve damage, spinal problems, carpal tunnel syndrome, or neurological conditions like stroke or multiple sclerosis. Sudden onset tingling with weakness, confusion, trouble speaking, dizziness, or a severe headache is an emergency, not an inconvenience. Your body rarely whispers without a reason. If the tingling feels different, lasts longer, or simply worries you, don’t wait it out in silence – let a doctor listen with you.
