They aren’t a curse and they aren’t a judgment on how clean you are. Maggots are simply fly babies cashing in on a perfect opportunity: warm weather, rotting food, and an open door to your trash. Flies sneak in, lay eggs on meat scraps or spoiled leftovers, then vanish. By the time you notice anything, the larvae are already feasting and multiplying in the dark.
Taking back control is less about heroics and more about simple habits. Kill the infestation with boiling water, hot vinegar solutions, and a ruthless scrub of every surface, lid included. Then lock things down: seal every bag, double-wrap raw meat, rinse the bin regularly, keep the lid snapped tight, and line the bottom with salt, lime, or diatomaceous earth. Add citrus peels or strong essential oils as a final “no vacancy” sign. Your bin stops being a horror scene and goes back to being just… trash.
