President Donald Trump has appointed three justices to the U.S. Supreme Court during his presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With several members of the Court among its oldest justices, speculation has continued over whether Trump could have the opportunity to nominate a fourth justice should a vacancy arise. On Monday, the president appeared to offer a lighthearted hint about one possible candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During a White House ceremony launching the Trump Accounts program\u2014a savings initiative championed by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, that was included in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act\u2014Trump joked that Cruz should be nominated to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The president praised Cruz\u2019s legal background before suggesting, tongue in cheek, that the Texas senator would receive unanimous Senate confirmation because lawmakers in both parties would be eager to see him leave the chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
> \u201cIn fact, somebody said, \u2018Would you ever appoint him to the United States Supreme Court?\u2019 Because he\u2019s a brilliant lawyer, Ted. I said, \u2018Well, he\u2019s the only one I can think of that\u2019s going to get 100 votes,’\u201d Trump said, according to the *Washington Examiner*.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
> \u201cAll Republicans will vote for him, all Democrats will vote for him, because they want to get him the h*** out of the Senate,\u201d Trump added, drawing laughter from those in attendance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
> \u201cIf I was having a hard time with getting the votes, I would appoint Ted Cruz. I\u2019d get 100%, guaranteed,\u201d the president said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At present, there is no vacancy on the Supreme Court. All nine justices remain on the bench, and neither Justice Clarence Thomas nor Justice Samuel Alito has publicly announced plans to retire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nevertheless, discussion about a potential future vacancy has continued since Trump returned to office. During his first term, he appointed Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speculation intensified after NPR published a June 30 report claiming that Alito intended to retire. The Supreme Court said no such announcement had been made, and NPR later retracted the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The episode renewed attention on who Trump might nominate if a seat on the Court becomes available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
White House officials confirmed to the *Washington Examiner* last week that Trump has already assembled a shortlist of potential Supreme Court candidates but declined to identify those under consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump\u2019s comments also underscored how dramatically his relationship with Cruz has changed over the past decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the 2016 Republican presidential primary, Cruz frequently criticized Trump\u2019s approach to judicial appointments. One South Carolina campaign advertisement questioned whether Trump could be trusted to nominate conservative justices, highlighting a 1999 interview with Tim Russert in which Trump described himself as \u201cpro-choice in every respect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since then, the two Republicans have become close political allies. Trump appointed three Supreme Court justices during his first term\u2014the most by any president in a single term since Ronald Reagan\u2014while Cruz emerged as one of the administration\u2019s strongest supporters in the Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Introducing Cruz at Monday\u2019s event, Trump praised the senator\u2019s record, saying, \u201cHe\u2019s done a wonderful job as a senator, highly respected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cruz also brings substantial legal credentials to any discussion of potential Supreme Court nominees. A former Supreme Court law clerk, he argued nine cases before the nation\u2019s highest court while serving as Texas solicitor general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His legal experience has long made him a frequent subject of speculation whenever a Supreme Court vacancy appears possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, Cruz remains one of the Senate\u2019s most polarizing members.
