Whenever I find myself having to use a public washroom, I go in with a \u201cget in and get out\u201d mentality. Because we don\u2019t usually spend a ton of time in these places, many of you have probably never given much thought to the fact that public washrooms all have U-shaped toilet seats. However, the toilets in our own homes generally have rounder toilet seats that connect all the way around. So, why is that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/go-viral.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Screen-shot-2018-07-13-at-11.25.41-AM.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2736\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">source:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/freshome.com\/2014\/05\/14\/increased-bathroom-hygiene-touchless-toilet-flush-kit-priced-75\/\">FreshHome<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, there are a few reasons as to why U-shaped toilet seats are in all public washrooms. According to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/mentalfloss.com\/article\/64677\/why-are-public-toilet-seats-u-shaped\">Mental Floss<\/a>, the first reason has a lot to do with hygiene. The gap in U-shaped toilet seats prevents users\u2019 genitals from coming into contact with the actual toilet seat, which allows public toilets to be somewhat cleaner. It\u2019s gross, I know&nbsp;\u2014 but there are other reasons, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/go-viral.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Screen-shot-2018-07-13-at-11.27.17-AM.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2737\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">source:&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/khak.com\/public-restroom-etiquette\/\">98.1 KHAK&nbsp;<\/a>\/&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/search\/photographer?family=editorial&amp;photographer=John+Greim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gettyimages<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another reason for U-shaped toilet seats has to do with keeping down costs. Because they require less material to construct, they\u2019re cheaper than standard toilet seats. But perhaps the most fascinating reason behind why U-shaped toilet seats exist is because they\u2019re&nbsp;<em>less likely to be stolen<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, it turns out that people&nbsp;<em>do<\/em>&nbsp;steal toilet seats. Roger Barry, managing director of Healthmatic (a UK-based company that designs and manages public restrooms),&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/mentalfloss.com\/article\/64677\/why-are-public-toilet-seats-u-shaped\">revealed<\/a>&nbsp;that people are less inclined to steal U-shaped toilet seats because they won\u2019t fit on standard home toilets. And so, this is a major reason as to why U-shaped toilets began being implemented into public washrooms. However, random tidbits of information like this are interesting, to say the least.
