Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville and political analyst Al Hunt expressed concern over the recent primary victories of several candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, arguing that the movement they represent should not define the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the winners, Democratic socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier, was among three Mamdani-endorsed candidates who secured victories in New York\u2019s primary elections Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During Thursday\u2019s episode of the \u201cPolitics War Room\u201d podcast, Hunt said the victories could \u201ccomplicate the politically existential question of winning in November.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although Carville and Hunt argued that Republicans are overstating the significance of the candidates as representative of the Democratic Party as a whole, they agreed that party leaders should establish a clear separation from the movement, citing reporting by The New York Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI have the quote right here, I\u2019ll get to it. She has attacked interracial relationships and the American flag. Lady, I ain\u2019t in the same party as you. I\u2019m sorry,\u201d Carville said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m just not, and I actually do think it\u2019s time for Democrats to talk \u2018the S-word.\u2019 \u2018Schism.\u2019 I really do,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEverybody\u2019s always said, \u2018No, no, we\u2019re coalition. We\u2019re a big tent,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cAnd there\u2019s some \u2013 there\u2019s just some s\u2014 that I can\u2019t be in the same tent with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Carville argued further that many of the recent left-wing socialist candidates do not actually like the Democratic Party<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said they are nonetheless running as Democrats, however, because they likely know there\u2019s no way to win as a third-party candidate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Still, Carville suggested a split is necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLet\u2019s negotiate a terms of a schism here. Maybe we can part under some kind of advantageous terms for both of us, but I\u2019m done,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnd I\u2019m not in that f\u2014ing political party.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI am totally comfortable in a political party that spends time questioning the policies of the government of Israel,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn fact, I\u2019m enthusiastic about that. I don\u2019t want to be in a political party that denies the right of the state of Israel to exist,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThat\u2019s just not \u2014 I just can\u2019t do that. I\u2019m sorry. It\u2019s just not doable,\u201d the veteran Democrat adviser said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey are a great gift to Donald Trump,\u201d Hunt replied, adding that it would be advantageous if other Democrats stood up against the left-wing onslaught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCertainly people like Obama, but also some of the younger Democrats and said, \u2018This is not us,’\u201d Hunt added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He went on to say if Democrats do not win big in November, \u201cthat group of crazies\u201d will be able to \u201cjust sabotage Hakeem Jeffries every step of the way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., initially caused some issues for the Democrats early in her career, he maintained that she ultimately became an effective member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, Hunt warned, \u201cI don\u2019t think this group has that potential.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI don\u2019t either,\u201d Carville agreed. \u201cAnd I think AOC is smart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI could be in the same party with her in many ways. I can\u2019t be in the same party with Miss Chevalier. Can\u2019t do it. Sorry,\u201d Carville added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, also appeared to distance herself from Mamdani and the candidates he backed who secured victories in Tuesday night\u2019s Democratic primary elections, expanding his influence within the party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSome of the candidates that he has supported are individuals who do not understand the politics of New York City, the cultural differences from district to district, who have not been part of the history and the struggle of some of these districts, and are relatively new to the body politic,\u201d James told CNN following the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
