Vice President J.D. Vance said Tuesday that the Department of Justice is actively looking into Rep. Ilhan Omar, escalating scrutiny surrounding the Minnesota Democrat and raising fresh political questions heading into the midterm election cycle.<\/p>\n
Vance made the remarks during a White House press briefing while temporarily filling in for press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who is on maternity leave.<\/p>\n
The exchange began when Daily Caller correspondent Reagan Reese asked about longstanding allegations involving Omar\u2019s immigration history, marriage timeline and prior campaign finance scrutiny.<\/p>\n
Vance declined to go into specifics but strongly suggested the matter is under federal review.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t want to prejudge an investigation,\u201d Vance said.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou read the things about Ilhan Omar, and about who she married, and whether she didn\u2019t marry this person or that person,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt certainly seems like something fishy is there.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut everyone is entitled to equal justice under the laws.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vance then appeared to directly confirm that the Justice Department is reviewing the matter.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo we\u2019re going to investigate it, we\u2019re going to take a look at it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf we think there\u2019s a crime, we\u2019re going to prosecute that crime, and that\u2019s something that the Department of Justice is looking at right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
The comments mark the strongest public indication yet from the Trump administration that Omar may currently be under federal scrutiny.<\/p>\n
Neither the Justice Department nor Omar\u2019s congressional office immediately responded to requests for comment following Vance\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n

GOP lawmakers have argued that pandemic waivers and loosened oversight created conditions that allowed widespread abuse in child nutrition programs.<\/p>\n

Vance\u2019s remarks also referenced broader concerns about fairness in how investigations are handled.<\/p>\n
