Ray Svejnoha missed his high school prom to go fight in World War II. But now, at 100, he has finally experienced it. That\u2019s all, thanks to some wonderful students, who are now praised for their wonderful gesture.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At 100 years old, WWII veteran Ray Svejnoha finally got the prom night he had missed more than 80 years earlier. Back in high school, Ray never made it to prom because duty called first.<\/p>\n

Before graduation, he was ordered to report for military service during World War II, leaving behind the teenage milestone so many take for granted.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring my younger age, I had a choice of going into the service, and I took two exams: one for the Navy and one for the Army Air Force,\u201d Svejnoha, who lives in a senior living community in Naperville, Illinois, told\u00a0Naperville Community Television.<\/p>\n

He added he \u201cdidn\u2019t have too much choice \u2014 I was supposed to report for duty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Svejnoha survived the war and returned to the U.S., where he has lived a long and happy life. But there was one thing he would never experience: the high school prom. At least that was what he thought.<\/p>\n

Students at Metea Valley High School in Illinois had heard Ray\u2019s story. Through the school\u2019s Tech Connect club, a group that helps seniors with technology, the students secretly planned a surprise prom invitation just for him.<\/p>\n

They arrived with patriotic balloons, American flags, and a handmade sign reading: \u201c82 years late, but right on time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ray couldn\u2019t believe his eyes. After all these years, he would finally get to experience prom.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was so nice of them to even think about it,\u201d he said after the surprise.<\/p>\n

And the kindness didn\u2019t stop there. Local businesses and community members came together to ensure the 100-year-old veteran had the full prom experience he never had as a teenager. Ray received a fresh haircut, a tuxedo fitting, and even rode to prom in a vintage trolley decorated with balloons.<\/p>\n

As he arrived at the dance, students greeted him with cheers and welcomed him onto the dance floor. The night clearly meant more to everyone than just a dance.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou hear a lot of bad things about teenagers,\u201d Ray said. \u201cWell, this is a good thing about them.\u201d<\/p>\n

At one point during the evening, the WWII veteran took the microphone to thank everyone who made the unforgettable moment possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot tell you how much I appreciate this, and I love you all,\u201d he told the crowd.<\/p>\n

After waiting 82 years, Ray finally got the prom night he deserved. Now, people everywhere are calling the students\u2019 gesture a beautiful reminder that kindness never goes out of style.<\/p>\n
