These \u201cenergy vampires\u201d silently add to utility bills, costing the average household between\u00a0<strong>$100 and $200 every year<\/strong>. Beyond wasted money, they can also increase the risk of household fires.<\/p>\n<p>A simple example is a\u00a0<strong>phone charger<\/strong>. Left plugged in, even without charging, it can waste about\u00a0<strong>$9 a year<\/strong>. With multiple chargers, that number can quickly climb to nearly\u00a0<strong>$50 annually<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Small kitchen appliances are another hidden drain. A\u00a0<strong>coffee maker<\/strong>\u00a0that remains plugged in can waste\u00a0<strong>around $22 a year<\/strong>, while slow cookers or Instant Pots may draw\u00a0<strong>$25 or more<\/strong>, even when not in use.<\/p>\n<p>Computers and office equipment also contribute. A\u00a0<strong>desktop computer and printer<\/strong>\u00a0sitting idle can use another\u00a0<strong>$80 a year<\/strong>, adding to both energy waste and fire hazards if dust builds up or wiring overheats.<\/p>\n<p>Altogether, these appliances can add up to at least\u00a0<strong>$147 wasted annually<\/strong>.
