Forensic evidence, rumored to have been leaked by the Portuguese police, appeared to point toward the McCanns being the perpetrators.<\/p>\n

When Kate asked why she was being interrogated, she was given a blunt but shocking answer: \u201cBecause we don\u2019t believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mother replied, \u201cAre you saying that I had something to do with Madeleine\u2019s disappearance?\u201d to which the detective replied, \u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Police offered her a plea deal<\/h2>\n

At the time, Gerry McCann\u2019s sister revealed that Kate had been offered a deal by the police. If she said she had accidentally killed her three-year-old daughter, she would get a reduced sentence. Kate denied it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey tried to get her to confess to having accidentally killed Madeleine by offering her a deal through her lawyer \u2014 \u2018If you say you killed Madeleine by accident and then hid her and disposed of the body, then we can guarantee you a two-year jail sentence or even less,\u201d\u2018 Gerry McCann\u2019s sister, Philomena, told ITV News at the time.<\/p>\n

In an interview with The Independent, Laura Bayston, who plays Kate in the Channel 5 drama\u00a0Under Suspicion: Kate McCann<\/em>, said filming the questioning scene was \u201chorrific.\u201d Per her lawyer\u2019s advice, Madeleine McCann answered \u201cno comment\u201d to 48 of the questions she was asked.<\/p>\n
