For months she had blamed the stabbing pain between her shoulder blades on sitting too long, then tried to rationalize the strange mix of hearing loss, constant runny nose, and a terrifying facial droop that was dismissed as \u201cjust migraines\u201d and anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>What ultimately saved her life was a vacation and a 4\u2011centimeter lump that suddenly appeared on her neck, forcing doctors to look deeper. Without treatment, she was told, she had about a month to live. Three years later, she is cancer\u2011free but still watches every twinge with cautious fear.
