While some stars openly embrace cosmetic procedures, others find themselves forced to respond to intense speculation about their appearance, whether or not they’ve actually changed anything.
Few actresses know that pressure better than Erin Moriarty.
The actress, best known for playing Annie January, aka Starlight, on the hit superhero series The Boys, became the center of viral discussion in early 2024 after social media users began dissecting her face and speculating that she had undergone plastic surgery.
Erin, who started acting as a teenager, built her career through projects like Jessica Jones, True Detective, and Blood Father before landing her breakout role on The Boys in 2019. Since then, she has become one of the show’s most recognizable stars, praised for bringing emotional depth and vulnerability to Starlight’s storyline.
But as her fame grew, so did scrutiny around her appearance.
The conversation escalated after journalist Megyn Kelly referenced Erin during a discussion about cosmetic procedures and social media beauty culture. According to CNN, Kelly used photos of the actress as an example of what she described as young women becoming obsessed with plastic surgery.
The backlash was immediate and deeply personal for Erin.
In January 2024, the actress temporarily left Instagram after being flooded with comments about her looks.

Responding to the speculation, Erin said many of the claims circulating online were simply false.
She described the accusations as “misinformed” and “inaccurate,” explaining that one of the comparison photos being widely shared had been taken “over a decade ago,” while another came from an event where she had “major contouring” done by a makeup artist.
“There is no excuse for these horrific allegations, the verbal abuse that I have had to delete, and genuinely false information that is being used to perpetuate a message that is exhibitionist feminism,” she wrote.
At the time, Erin also opened up about how emotionally draining the constant commentary had become, saying the situation left her feeling “dehumanized.”
Supporters quickly rallied behind her, with many arguing that natural aging, makeup techniques, weight fluctuations, lighting, and camera angles are often enough to dramatically alter someone’s appearance in photos.
Others criticized the growing trend of treating women’s faces like public property open for forensic analysis online.
Despite stepping away briefly, Erin later returned to Instagram and continued promoting both her work and personal projects.
The discussion around her appearance has continued to follow her in interviews and online spaces, though the actress has repeatedly pushed back against the fixation on her looks.
More recently, Erin also revealed she has been dealing with Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder that affects the thyroid and can cause symptoms including fatigue, anxiety, weight changes, inflammation, and swelling around the eyes.
Her admission led many fans to reconsider earlier commentary about her appearance, especially speculation centered on her facial features and weight.
Following the revelation, supporters praised the actress for speaking openly about chronic illness and pointed out how quickly internet speculation can spiral without context.
Erin has not positioned herself as anti-cosmetic procedures, nor has she suggested women owe the public explanations for their choices. Instead, her response has largely focused on the cruelty of online culture and the way female celebrities are constantly dissected under impossible beauty standards.
